Connect your Stripe account

Documentation · 6 min read

Carte uses Stripe Connect (Express)so you keep ownership of your money — payouts land in your bank account directly from Stripe, and your customers' cards are processed under your Stripe account. Carte never holds your funds.

What you'll need

  • A government-issued ID for the business owner (Stripe's KYC).
  • Your business EIN or SSN (depending on entity type).
  • Bank account details for payouts (account + routing number).
  • About 5 minutes — Stripe's form is short.

Step-by-step

1

Open the Payments page in Carte admin

Go to Settings → Payments in your admin. You'll see a card prompting you to connect Stripe.

Accept payments with Stripe

Connect your Stripe account to start taking online orders. Payouts go to your bank — Carte never holds your money.

2

Click “Connect Stripe”

We open a hosted Stripe form prefilled with your business email and country (from your restaurant profile). Stripe asks for the legal details required by financial regulations.

3

Fill out the Stripe Express form

You'll be asked for:

  • Business type (sole prop, LLC, corporation, etc.)
  • Legal business name + DBA, address, and tax ID
  • Owner's personal details (DOB, SSN/EIN, address)
  • Bank account for payouts

Return to Carte

After you submit, Stripe sends you back to Carte. We refresh your status automatically. You should see three green checkmarks:

Details submitted
Charges enabled
Payouts enabled
Three green checks = you're ready to accept orders.

What if a check stays grey?

If Charges enableddoesn't turn green within 24 hours, Stripe usually needs more information. Open the Stripe dashboard from the Payments page and look for an alert at the top of the page — Stripe will tell you exactly what's missing (commonly a clearer photo of an ID or a utility bill).

Onboarding incomplete

Stripe needs a few more details before you can accept payments.

When Stripe needs more info, you'll see a yellow status bar.

Taxes and fees

Sales tax is calculated and remitted by Stripe Tax — Carte simply forwards customer location and item info to Stripe at checkout. You'll see tax broken out as a separate line on every order.

Stripe's standard processing fee (around 2.9% + 30¢ for online cards in the US, varies by country and method) is deducted before funds arrive in your bank. Carte does not take a per-transaction cut — our pricing is the monthly subscription only.

Disconnecting Stripe

You can disconnect Stripe at any time from the Payments page. This only removes the link between your Stripe account and Carte — your Stripe account, balances, and history stay with Stripe. Existing orders that were paid before disconnection continue to work for refunds.

Common questions

Can I use the same Stripe account for two restaurants?

Each Carte tenant connects a single Stripe account. If you operate two venues under separate brands, you'll typically want separate Stripe accounts so payouts and tax filings stay clean.

Do you support countries outside the US?

Yes — Stripe Connect Express is available in 40+ countries. The currency on your menu defaults to your account's default currency, but you can override it from Restaurant profile.

What happens if Stripe rejects my application?

Stripe will email you with the reason. You can address the issue and resubmit through the same dashboard link. Carte keeps your account record so you don't need to start over from scratch.

Still stuck?

Email support and include your Carte tenant name and your Stripe account ID (starts with acct_). We can usually unblock onboarding within a business day.
